The Maine State town of Skowhegan, with a population of 8,600, is the county seat of Somerset County and home to the Skowhegan State Fair which was first mooted in 1818 and first held in January 1819. The fair celebrates the agricultural heritage of the area, but the Fairground also hosts Skowhegan Harness races. The current Fairground was first used in 1856, while the 4 furlong oval course has been an integral part of the Fair for some considerable time. The highlight of the meeting is the Hight Invitational which is always looked forward to in eager anticipation.
